Competition notes:
Note 1: Rev It Up, Selah--A typical "first tournament" and we found out the usual things. Good serving and good serve-receive are extremely important. A slow start in pool play doomed us to play in the Consolation Bracket of playoffs but strong determination gained the Consolation Championship and the prize that went with that victory. Our next tournament will be in Pasco this coming Sunday. Until then our goal will be steady improvement in all our play. -- Coach Larry
Note 2: Tri Cities Kick Off, Pasco--Some rough times, yet some very good times. Playing in what we thought was the toughest pool of the tournament we had the opportunity to accept the challenge of strong hitting and tough serving by our opponents. This helped get us ready to win a close three game match in bracket play before finally losing another very tight three game match to end the day.
Note 3: Mid Season Classic, Yakima--Determination was the word of the day for this tournament with several marathon games being decided by the two point margin--one of which was a tough 29-31 loss to a strong Grandview 88 team. But there were several long two-point wins in several three game matches during bracket play that were important in winning the Consolation Championship. Our most consistent day of serving thus far resulted in a big improvement in serving percentage. A new confidence at the line was in evidence for Mary, Hannah, Grace, Hunter, Kristin, Cheyenne and Ashley who all improved on the previous tournaments. Next stop--the Grandview tournament in two weeks. Nice job team!
Note: Mid Season Classic, Yakima--Thank you players and parents for the excellent job with court set up on Friday night and for clean up at the end on Saturday.
Note 4: Valentine Volley, Grandview--Second tournament in a row to earn the Consolation Championship, which probably means that with more consistency in pool play we are ready to move into the upper bracket and an opportunity to play toward the overall championship. There were times when we had some awesome tough serves (Kristin and Ashley), there were times we had some good dependable serves (K.C., Cheyenne, Maddie, Hunter, Sarah) and there were times we had some big improvements (Mary, Hannah, Grace). Our next tournament--the big Northwest Jamboree in Yakima March 15-16.
Note 5: Northwest Jamboree--It was a wonderful maturing process that took place between the first match on Saturday and our play during final bracket play that took us to the championship match (and Tournament T-shirts). This process was to be expected with this team of mostly 7th grade players, but was still a little surprising with its suddenness over two short days of nine matches. It will take focus and individual desire to maintain this attitude in our future games but I am confident of the results. Congratulations on a great finish, team.
